Intel Core i5-3550 Max Temp

Model number i5-3550
Family Intel Core i5
Maximum operating temperature 67.4°C

The temperature in the table above is the absolute maximum temperature (Tmax), as a general rule you have to keep your temps 10-15 degrees lower under load, and 30-40 degrees lower when system is idle.

  1. My i5-3550 CPU, which is using a stock i3-2120 heatsink/fan, so it's worse than the official i5-3550 stock cooler, which has a copper contact on it where as the i3-2120 is just aluminum, idles around 35-40c or so depending on room temp and under roughly a full load (especially for any length of time), without running really taxing programs like Prime95(which will go higher), it floats around 60c. but I do have my CPU undervolted by -0.130v (which is the lowest I can lower the voltage and keep a stable system) which shaves off about 13c under load etc as running at stock voltages, temps are noticeably higher.

I am confident my temps are 'good enough' and will likely get many years of use out of it. I think what's mentioned in this article is overly safe. besides the CPU throttling does not start I think until it reaches 105c and even when I first installed my used i5-3550 which I got last year for only 20 dollars on Ebay, temps were quite a bit higher (I was not undervolting at this time as things were stock), especially when running Prime95 as they peaked around 95c or so which are obviously really pushing it. but after tweaking voltage and disabling 'avx' on Prime95, which seems to be more of a real world use peak temps, I got generally in the 67-69c range which is not optimal but not horrible especially given general usage won't tax the CPU like that and that I seem to be generally in the 35-40c at idle or so and under load probably peaks around 60c or so. I suspect to have any real potential for damage one would probably have to be consistently running it at a higher temp for a rather long time which people generally won't do especially assuming they keep the heatsink/fan area fairly clean.
